Katie Ward is a Suffolk based author whose debut novel, Girl Reading, is published by Virago (UK) and Scribner (US). She received high critical praise on both sides of the Atlantic; the Times called Girl Reading ‘a real wow of a first novel’ and it was Book of the Week on Oprah’s blog.

In 2013 Katie received the Clarissa Luard Award from Hilary Mantel, an award given to a writer under the age of 35.

Katie was born in Somerset in 1979. Before writing fulltime she worked in the public and voluntary sectors, including at a women’s refuge and for a Member of Parliament. She took a career break to write her debut novel after coming across an article about a book of portraits of women and girls reading.

“I love going to the theatre, going to an art gallery and visiting a new city. I read, but not always fiction. I’m a couch-to-5K graduate and run, slowly, in all weathers including snow. I binge on box sets. I drink Earl Grey tea. I can love any artist, really, who makes work with integrity and delight. I have a husband and a cat. I try my best.”
